It wasn’t all work, however. In 2014, I discovered a passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I have been fortunate to execute training camps and compete overseas, mostly in the USA. Most recently, I competed in Las Vegas at the World’s Masters and took away a silver medal. It has taught me that when things get hard or difficult, there is always an option or a solution, as well as teaching me how to be a student. The construction industry has many challenges and is forever changing, so it’s important to understand that we need to constantly evolve and adapt our practices to suit new industry standards and products. There will be challenges that arise during any project, and it’s important our clients know that we will do our absolute best to achieve a high-end result when things get tricky.

In 2016, after working for other people for over 15 years, I decided it was time to go out on my own. I had reached the point where I felt I had something novel to offer the industry. I wanted to build my own company and brand where our clients didn’t just feel like customers or “walking dollar signs.” I wanted to build a company where our clients felt secure in the fact that we were working for them and their families to achieve their dream. I also wanted to create that same positive environment for our workers, subcontractors, and their families.

Not only has Jeffries Construction Limited grown, but so has the Jeffries’ girl gang. My partner in business and in life, Ceara, and I now have 3 beautiful girls, Dahlia (7), Edith (5), and Maeve (2), and I am looking forward to hopefully having more women in our trades in New Zealand.

I am proud to be able to give back to our community. We have used Western ITM as our core merchant since we began. We were thrilled when they invited us to support their community outreach program. We donate our time assisting the students on campus at Massey High School and demonstrating relevant building techniques and practices. We also provide off-campus construction sites for real-world work experience with trade professionals and potential employment upon completion of their pre-trade certificate.
